The program examines all the system files, the Windows registry, and the programs and files loaded at boot time. This is because the majority of malicious programs load at boot time, and Trojan Remover scans all the files loaded at boot time for malware such as adware, spyware, remote access Trojans, internet worms, and other malicious software. It also checks to see if Windows loads services that are hidden by rootkit techniques to avoid detection.
For each identified malware, the program shows an alert screen that identifies the file location and name, offers to remove the program's reference from the system files, and allows the user to rename the file to stop it from activating. This is especially useful since most malware programs are memory-resident, which makes their deactivation more difficult. Trojan Remover automatically restarts the system and completely disables the malware before Windows is reloaded, making the process more convenient for the user.
It writes a detailed log file every time it performs a scan. The log file contains information on which programs load at boot time, and what actions Trojan Remover carried out. The log file can be viewed and printed using Notepad.
The FastScan component of Trojan Remover is set to automatically scan for malware every time the user starts their PC. This can be disabled if the user wishes to do so. The user can also run the FastScan manually at any time by selecting it from the main menu. The FastScan checks all malware-loading points, making it a quick and effective check for actively loading malware.
Scanning Files and Folders
Users can also scan individual files and directories from within Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the file or folder and selecting "Scan with Trojan Remover." They can also scan a whole drive or any directories on a drive by selecting "Scan a Drive/Directory" from the main menu.
The software incorporates an integral updater that allows for quick and easy program and database updates. A scheduled task automates daily update checks, and users can also carry out manual update checks at any time they choose.
The program comes with a comprehensive help file that can be viewed online. Context-sensitive help is also available for most screens by tapping the F1 key.
Installing/Uninstalling
The installation of anti-malware software like Trojan Remover can be prevented by some malware programs. If the installation screen disappears while trying to install or update the program, it may be due to a malware program shutting down the installer. To work around this issue, the user can try a "silent" install by saving the trjsetup[nnn].exe file (or trj[nnn].exe if updating the program) to a directory on the computer, and then running it through the command prompt.
To run a silent install, the user needs to click on the START button, then click on RUN. In the box that comes up, the user types in "\trjsetup[nnn].exe" /silent or "\trj[nnn].exe" /silent if updating the program. The user needs to replace the actual path to where they saved the downloaded setup file and make sure that the path and filename are surrounded by quotes. For example, if the setup file is saved to C:\My Downloads, the command would look like this: "C:\My Downloads\trjsetup675.exe" /silent (there is a space before the /silent).
Trojan Remover will then be installed in the default directory, which is C:\Program Files\Trojan Remover. A progress window will appear as the installation proceeds, and the user may need to try this a couple of times if it fails.
If the silent install still fails, the user can try installing Trojan Remover in SAFE mode. This will disable all unnecessary drivers and services and only load essential system files, making it easier to install anti-malware software. To boot in SAFE mode, the user needs to restart their computer and press the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears. From there, they can select SAFE mode and then try to install the app again.
It is important to note that some malware programs may still try to prevent the installation of Trojan Remover even in SAFE mode. If the user continues to experience issues with installation, they should contact the support team for assistance.
