VMware® Server is a free tool, which enables the end user to create virtual machines, with special focus on enabling users to access those servers with remote connections. This is extremely convenient if you want to run one or more operating systems on a single computer at the same time, and to do so using very streamlined set of tools that can be easily manipulated even by users who are not professionals or have years of technical experience with virtual machine operations. Even though VMware Server does not offer incredibly large amount of tools that can be found in some other modern professional software packages, what is presented here for free use is more than enough to enable anyone to easily create, edit, play, clone and revert to previous snapshot of each separate virtual machine with ease. This all is achievable using incredibly simple user interface that was specifically crafted to be intuitive and well-organized, with enough information to enable all users to manage all aspects of their VMware sessions.

First version of VMware Server appeared on the market in July of 2006 as a replacement for the discontinued VMware GSX Server, developing new capabilities until January of 2010 when support and development of VMware Server was shut down. However even though this app is not anymore supported by its developers, many users around the world are still using it, mostly to run virtual machines of Linux operating systems. Some of its main features are:

  • Operating systems that can be installed on the virtual machines are Windows, Linux, Solaris and Netware
  • Portable – virtual machines can be moved to a second computer without losing their configurations
  • Support for legacy virtual machines
  • Supports virtual hardware devices like CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, floppy drives, parallel ports, etc.

Note: VMware has dropped support for VMware Server on June 30th 2011. Users still can use it but it's recommended to switch to VMware Workstation and VMware Player.
