This prevents unwanted system modifications, malware infections, and registry changes.
Originally developed by Sophos, the open-source Sandboxie Plus community has taken over its development, improving features and compatibility with modern operating systems.
Main Features
Application Isolation: Runs applications in a virtualized space, preventing them from affecting the host system.
Secure Web Browsing: Ensures that browser sessions remain separate from the main system, blocking malware and unwanted downloads.
File and Registry Virtualization: Prevents programs from modifying system files and registry entries unless explicitly permitted.
Customizable Sandbox Configuration: Users can fine-tune sandbox settings for better performance and security.
Portability: Allows users to run applications in a sandbox without permanently installing software on their machines.
Support for Multiple Sandboxes: Run different applications in separate sandboxes simultaneously.
Open-Source Development: Frequent updates and community-driven enhancements.
User Interface
The app features a modernized and more user-friendly interface compared to the original Sandboxie Classic. The new GUI provides a more intuitive way to manage and configure sandboxes.
It includes a toolbar, a settings menu, and real-time monitoring of sandboxed applications. Advanced users can access additional settings to tweak security rules and permissions.

What's new in this version:
Added:
- added outside sandboxed-window border modes (onoutside, ttloutside, and alloutside) in SandMan; these draw the configured border outside the application frame, while the new BorderInsideMaximized=y setting (enabled by default) moves the border and label inside maximized or snapped windows so they remain visible
- added persistence for manually expanded and collapsed SandMan process-tree branches across task-list refreshes and UI restarts
- added global BoxAliasDisplayMode controls for display-only sandbox names across SandMan, Start.exe, window titles, borders, tooltips, recovery logs, and messages, while preserving the real box name for paths and operations; Import Sandboxes can optionally read archived aliases
- added an optional literal search box to compact and non-compact SandMan tray menus for filtering sandboxes and groups
- added a SandMan setting to restore either the active or default snapshot after automatic deletion, consistently across synchronous and asynchronous cleanup, with Snapshot Manager access and refresh controls
Changed:
- changed SandMan's Auto Expand Tree to preserve explicit group, sandbox, and process expansion choices while using the toggle as the default for items without saved state; Find bar Expand All and Collapse All remain one-time actions, and Options/LegacyAutoExpandTree=true retains the previous behavior
- validated compatibility with Windows build 29634 and updated DynData
- changed SandMan Trace Log auto scrolling overriding manual scrolling; it now pauses away from the bottom and provides an in-list resume button
Fixed:
- fixed SandMan File Panel column widths resetting when switching between boxes
- fixed a bug that could cause the list of open handles to be reported incorrectly
- fixed SandMan File Panel and Browse Files blocking Recycle Bin deletion of expanded folder trees, made file-name sorting case-insensitive, and made folders sort before files
- fixed SandMan Box Groups collapsing during refreshes, restarts, and sandbox moves despite remembered group state
- fixed driver incompatibility with latest Windows Insider build
- fixed SandMan File Panel treating registry hive log files such as RegHive.LOG1 and RegHive.LOG2 as descendants of RegHive because of their shared filename prefix, causing them to be omitted when deleting the selection together
- fixed BoxNameTitle prefix buffer sizing for long sandbox aliases and combined alias/name titles
- fixed incorrect character and byte buffer-size handling in Start Menu shortcut data, window class-name queries, configuration reads, and SandMan driver-log retrieval
- fixed Start Menu shortcut icon-path IPC buffer handling
- fixed ApiTrace stack exhaustion on Cygwin and other alternate stacks by replacing callback-side formatting with a compact synchronous logging path, preserving legacy ordering and stack capture
- improved early stack symbol loading by retrying unresolved addresses after process discovery and refreshing the DbgHelp module list when needed
- fixed SandMan offering to install the DbgHelp add-on when enabling stack traces even though the add-on was already installed
- fixed ConfidentialBox=y could trap the user on a black screen when trying to elevate a process
