Adobe Photoshop CS4 Update is a raster graphics editor released in 2008, around one and a half year after its predecessor CS3 which focused mainly on establishing a strong base for future expansions of this industry-leading digital art suite that was embraced by millions of home, education, and professional users all around the world.

This app is part of Adobe Creative Cloud (20+ Apps and Services). It’s FREE for first 7 days, Try Now!

After CS3 introduced its interface redesign and numerous optimizations, fixes, and enhancements to the base architecture of the suite, Adobe Photoshop CS4 brought with itself a wide array of new tools and services that have enabled users to reach new heights of art creation or photo editing, optimize their workflow and speed up many previously difficult tasks.

This release introduced another simplification of the user interface, new tools and hardware acceleration for smoother and faster panning, zooming and canvas rotation, support for tabbed documents which boosted multitasking, and tools for Content-aware Scaling, Auto-blending, Auto layer alignment, Adjustments panel, new workspace, and file management, and more capable Adobe Bridge CS4 for sharing Photoshop data with other apps from the suite.

Immediately after CS4 arrived on the market in late 2008, developers from Adobe started working on an official update archive that aimed to optimize the entire suite and remove few newly discovered bugs that plagued users who handled very large projects. Adobe Photoshop CS4 Update was released for FREE for all owners of the CS4 suite.

The updater can be downloaded and run on any PC with CS4 installed, although the updating procedure will be finalized only if the app detects a fully purchased and activated version of Photoshop. On some PCs, the update can only start after users temporarily deactivate their antivirus software, and in some cases start the app using the “Run as Administrator” option.

While the Adobe Photoshop 4 Update is intended to enhance the stability and performance of the entire CS4 suite, it also brings a small number of functional changes to its UI and some tools. However, users should mostly view this update as a stability and reliability fix of an already very well-made photo and digital art editor.

Image Editing Capabilities: It was a robust image editing software with powerful tools for retouching, compositing, and manipulating images.

Advanced Features: It introduced several advanced features at the time, such as content-aware scaling, 3D capabilities, and improved selection tools.

Layer Styles: CS4 improved layer styles and blending options, making it easier to create various effects and designs.

Customizable Interface: Users could customize the workspace to suit their preferences, making it more user-friendly.

Compatibility: It was compatible with a wide range of file formats, including PSD (Photoshop's native format), JPEG, PNG, and more.

Outdated: Photoshop CS4 is more than a decade old, so it lacks many of the features, enhancements, and performance improvements found in newer versions.

Compatibility Issues: It may not run smoothly or be fully compatible with modern operating systems, hardware, or high-resolution displays. You might encounter crashes and bugs.

Limited 64-bit Support: While CS4 introduced limited 64-bit support for Windows, it wasn't as robust as newer versions, which fully embrace 64-bit architecture for improved performance.

Lack of Cloud Integration: Adobe Creative Cloud integration, which allows for seamless sharing and syncing of files and settings across devices, is not available in CS4.

Security and Support: As Adobe has moved on to newer versions, CS4 no longer receives updates or security patches. This makes it potentially vulnerable to security threats.

Limited Camera and Raw Support: Newer camera models and RAW formats may not be supported in CS4, requiring additional workarounds.

What's new in this version:

The Adobe® Photoshop® CS4 11.0.2 update addresses a number of critical issues and vulnerabilities discovered after Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended (11.0 and 11.0.1) software were released.

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 and earlier for Windows and Macintosh that could allow an attacker who successfully exploits these vulnerabilities to take control of the affected system. A malicious .ASL, .ABR, or .GRD file must be opened in Photoshop CS4 by the user for an attacker to be able to exploit these vulnerabilities. Adobe recommends Photoshop CS4 customers update to Photoshop CS4 11.0.2, which resolves these issues.

The Photoshop 11.0.2 update also addresses a number of problems with brushes, styles and gradient preset files discovered after Photoshop CS4 was released.

Note: None of these issues affect Photoshop CS5.
