Avast Clear (Avast Software Uninstall Utility) can completely remove Avast when Add/Remove programs does not work properly. Sometimes it's not possible to uninstall Avast the standard way - using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the control panel. In this case, you can use uninstallation utility Avast Clear.

How to Fully Uninstall Avast Antivirus on Windows 10 or Windows 11

In certain situations, you may need to completely uninstall and reinstall your Avast Antivirus software. There are a few different ways to remove Avast from your system, including:
  • Via Windows Settings (Apps & Features)
  • Using the official Avast removal tool – Avast Clear
  • Through the Command Prompt (if other methods fail)
This FileHorse guide will walk you through uninstalling Avast Antivirus using Avast Clear and, if needed, how to use the Command Prompt if Avast Clear doesn’t work.

Option 1: Uninstall Avast Using Avast Clear

Avast Clear is a dedicated removal tool that bypasses the standard uninstaller, making it ideal for cases where the usual uninstall method fails or if you see the "setup is already running" error.

Supported Avast Products:

Avast Premium Security

Avast Free Antivirus

Steps to Uninstall with Avast Clear:
  • Download the avastclear.exe utility and save it (default folder is Downloads).
  • Right-click the file and choose Run as administrator.
  • When prompted, click Yes to restart your PC in Safe Mode.
  • In Safe Mode, Avast Clear will launch. Confirm the detected Avast installation folder and product (these are usually auto-filled).
  • Click Uninstall, then restart your PC when prompted.
If You See “Setup is Already Running” During Uninstall

You won’t be able to uninstall Avast via standard methods while its setup process is running in the background (e.g., during virus definition updates or a pending uninstall).

Here’s how to manually stop the setup and proceed with Avast Clear:
  • Open Avast Antivirus and go to Menu > Settings > Troubleshooting.
  • Untick the option Enable Self-Defense.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Locate Avast Antivirus, then click End Task.
  • Now, launch Avast Clear to uninstall the software.
Option 2: Uninstall Avast Using Command Prompt

If Avast Clear fails to remove Avast, you can try uninstalling it manually via the Command Prompt. This method is more advanced and should only be used if other options don’t work.

Steps to Uninstall via Command Prompt:

Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\setup\

Open the file Stats.ini in a text editor.

Under the [Common] section, add the line: SilentUninstallEnabled=1 and save the file.

In the Start Menu, search for cmd, then right-click and select Run as administrator.

In the Command Prompt, type:

cd "C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\setup\"
instup.exe /instop:uninstall /silent

Press Enter to run the command and uninstall Avast silently.
