Camera is a lightweight Chrome browser application by Google that brings the simplicity and intuitiveness of the smartphone camera apps directly to your desktop PC, laptop, or, best yet, your portable Windows tablet!

Built from the ground up to emulate the UI elements and simple tools found in camera apps on modern smartphones, this app will be best suited for users who just want to experience the well-known process of photo capture when they are away from their smartphone device.

Note: This item can only run on ChromeOS.

Once installed on your PC and Chrome browser (which is a very fast procedure for an application that weighs in at just quarter of a single megabyte!), the camera icon will be added to the app section of your Chrome browser (chrome://apps), enabling anyone to quickly bring out camera viewfinder and start snapping pictures from your built-in PC camera or external webcams.

The built-in light editing tools are listed at the very bottom of the window of the app, enabling access to a modest amount of simple swipeable editing features. They include a small number of eye-catching filters such as greyscale, sepia, beauty, newspaper, retro, and swirls.

The entire procedure of photo capture, setting up the camera, and light editing is available from the interface that fully emulates the look and feel of smartphone camera apps.

Instead of finger touches, users can easily use the mouse. The users of touchscreen devices such as laptops and tablets can, of course, still use their fingers, finally being able to have a smartphone-like camera experience on their Windows device.

The app supports switching between multiple cameras (if they are all properly detected by the Windows OS) and has access to some advanced photo features such as camera mirroring, timer capturing, and the multi-shot feature.

FAQs

What is the Camera Chrome app used for?
The Camera Chrome app allows users to access and control their webcam directly from the browser environment. It can be used to take photos, record videos, and adjust basic camera settings without installing separate desktop software.

Is the Camera Chrome app still supported?
Support depends on Chrome Apps availability. Since Google has been phasing out Chrome Apps, functionality may be limited or restricted depending on the platform, especially outside ChromeOS environments.

Is the Camera Chrome app relevant in 2026?
In 2026, it is mostly considered outdated due to the deprecation of Chrome Apps. Most users rely on built-in camera apps in Windows or browser-based camera access instead of standalone Chrome apps.
