GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. It is a powerful piece of software with capabilities not found in any other free software product. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert-quality photo-retouching program, an online batch-processing system, a mass production image renderer, or an image format converter. GIMP is modular, expandable, and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image-manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.

Features and Highlights

Customizable Interface
Each task requires a different environment and It allows you to customize the view and behavior the way you like it. Starting from the widget theme, allowing you to change colors, widget spacings and icon sizes to custom toolsets in the toolbox. The interface is modulized into so called docks, allowing you to stack them into tabs or keep them open in their own window. Pressing the tab key will toggle them hidden.

Photo Enhancement
Numerous digital photo imperfections can be easily compensated for using GIMP. Fix perspective distortion caused by lens tilt simply choosing the corrective mode in the transform tools. Eliminate lens' barrel distortion and vignetting with a powerful filter but a simple interface.

Digital Retouching
The program is ideal for advanced photo retouching techniques. Get rid of unneeded details using the clone tool, or touch up minor details easily with the new healing tool. With the perspective clone tool, it's not difficult to clone objects with perspective in mind just as easily as with the orthogonal clone.

Hardware Support
It includes a very unique support for various input devices out of the box. Pressure and tilt sensitive tablets, but also a wide range of USB or MIDI controllers. You can bind often-used actions to device events such as rotating a USB wheel or moving a MIDI controller's slider. Change the size, angle, or opacity of a brush while you paint, bind your favorite scripts to buttons. Speed up your workflow!

File Formats
The file format support ranges from the common likes of JPEG (JFIF), GIF, PNG, TIFF to special use formats such as the multi-resolution and multi-color-depth Windows icon files. The architecture allows us to extend GIMP's format capabilities with a plug-in. You can find some rare format support in the plugin registry.

To save disk space, any format can be saved with an archive extension such as ZIP, GZ, or BZ2 and the app will transparently compress the file without you needing to do any extra steps.

What's new in this version:

- Disable Arbitrary Rotation menus (under both Image and Layer menus) if no image is active, for consistency
- New gradient available: FG to Transparent (Hardedge) gradient

A change in linuxwacom made some graphics tablet crash GIMP. Though the issue is in the driver (downgrading it "fixes" the issue), it was bad enough that a workaround was also added in GIMP code so that we don't crash with the newer driver. A fix was also merged on linuxwacom itself:
New palette import supports:
- Adobe Swatch Exchange (ASE)
- Adobe Color Book (ACB)
- Generated Brush previews are now rotated clockwise with the brush angle, which goes against the documentation. Nevertheless this is how angles were used on canvas in the 2.10 branch until now, so to avoid breaking existing workflows while having consistent preview, we chose to follow actual on-canvas usage over documentation. It may be re-evaluated for GIMP 3.

Text tool:
- When replacing a selection, take and apply markup (if any) from the first character of the selection for the entered text. This fixes the case when you no longer can change the global layer text properties after replacing the text.
- Set the blank font name for the standard font instead of 'Standard' to fix the issue when 'Standard' can be actual font from the list or a font which starts with (e.g. Standard Symbols PS)

User Interface:
Item tree view lock boxes:
- now separately themable with gtkrc
- showing a white frame when hovering over lock buttons
- showing a small padlock next the lock icon when it's active
- Add Table of Contents to User Manual submenu (in Help menu)

Fixed vulnerabilities:
- DDS: ZDI-CAN-22093
- PSD: ZDI-CAN-22094
- PSP: ZDI-CAN-22096 and ZDI-CAN-22097
- JPEG-XL: support libjxl v0.9 decoding API
- Metadata editor: more DigitalSourceType values
- PDF are now loaded at 300PPI by default

- Added support of non-square aspect ratio by setting different vertical and horizontal resolution when a loaded file has the PixelAspectRatio metadata set
- Various more file format fixes (at least GIF, PDF import, HEIF/AVIF, JPEG XL, XWD, DDS) and various fixes in non-file format related plug-ins too
- Image Map: HTTPS scheme now accepted in the URL field

- Do not save Photoshop specific EXIF metadata when exporting images because they can contain sensitive data and we cannot update them
- We now update Exif.Photo.PixelX/YDimension Exif tags when resizing and exporting (but only if they were already present, as they are non-essential)

- 20 translations were updated: Belarusian, Catalan, Chinese (China), Danish, Dutch, Georgian, German, Greek, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian

- Added code in the Windows installer script for the ARM 64-bit build, bundled into the same universal installer (though the first experimental installer with Aarch64 support was for GIMP 2.10.34 revision 2)
