Speedtest Chrome add-on incorporates a new icon to your web browser toolbar and enables you with a single click to test the capabilities of your internet connection.
In addition to the traditional measurements of maximum download and upload speeds, this one-minute-long test will also showcase the responsiveness of your internet connection (ping) to the test server and “web speed” timed score for the ability to load the website, consisting of many small individual elements.
While this tool is fully focused on providing regular users with a simple overview of the current state of their internet connection, Ookla has enhanced its SpeedTest service with numerous professional and enterprise features that can be used for advanced analytics and testing of large internet infrastructure projects.
But if you are wondering how your home, work, or public internet connection is holding up, if you have enough bandwidth to perform your tasks, and you want to see how much bandwidth your family left you after they all started using their own internet-connected device, then a simple click on the icon in your Chrome toolbar may be the best and fastest way to find out.

Speedtest Chrome addon comes in an installation package that is just under 5 MB, enabling you to download and install it in mere seconds. After the installation procedure is finished, a new Speed test icon will appear in your toolbar in the top-right corner of your internet browser.
Clicking on it will activate a pop-up window with a single large “GO!” icon that will activate the automatic procedures for determining the speed and quality of your internet connection.
The entire procedure is automated and lasts around a minute. While the test performed on Speedtest.net gives you the ability to pick and choose which server to contact during the test, this Chrome addon will automatically contact the closest server.
In the configuration area of the utility, you can choose to sign in to the account that will remember all your test scores and activate/deactivate the Web Speed test.
This particular test requires permission to “Read and change all your data on the websites you visit”. After each finished speed test, a small arrow icon will appear on top of the pop-up window, enabling you to share your result on social networks, or grab a URL link that you can post anywhere your link.
FAQs
What does Speedtest by Ookla measure and how does it work?
Speedtest measures your internet connection’s download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping) by connecting to a nearby test server and transferring data in real time. It selects optimal servers automatically to simulate real-world performance and provide accurate results for your current network conditions.
How accurate is Speedtest by Ookla?
Speedtest is generally accurate for measuring real-time connection performance, but results can vary depending on factors like server selection, network congestion, device limitations, and whether other apps are using bandwidth. Users on Reddit often note that running multiple tests and using different servers gives a more reliable average.
Why is my Speedtest result slower than my internet plan?
Lower-than-expected results can be caused by Wi-Fi interference, background downloads, outdated hardware, or network congestion. ISPs advertise maximum speeds under ideal conditions, while real-world performance can fluctuate. Running tests on a wired connection usually provides more accurate results.
Can I use Speedtest on mobile and different devices?
Yes, Speedtest is available across multiple platforms, including web browsers, mobile apps (iOS and Android), and desktop applications. This allows users to test internet performance on different devices and compare results across networks.
