Max Payne 1 is an action-adventure third-person shooter developed by Finish studio Remedy Entertainment and published on PC by Rockstar Games in the summer of 2001.

During the time of its release, Max Payne managed to revolutionize PC gaming space with its focus on highly detailed 3D visuals, fast-paced and thrilling action, new gameplay ability of “Bullet Time” that allowed gamers to slow down time and briefly overpower enemies with superior accuracy (a move that was popularized by the then quite recently released Hollywood film “The Matrix”), and the dark and atmospheric noir story that was told in a very unique visual style that mixed 3D cinematics with the animated 2D comic book panels.

Quickly after its release, Max Payne 1 found great success on the PC platform and has enabled Remedy Entertainment to become one of the most respected and successful independent AAA studios that are still releasing high-quality titles to this day. Max Payne franchise was eventually expanded with the sequel developed by Remedy and a third title that was fully developed by Rockstar games who are the current owners of the entire Max Payne IP rights.

The story of the game is centered around the main protagonist, a police detective called Max Payne. After the death of his family, Max goes on revenge against the criminal underground that riles the dark and unforgiving streets of New York City. While on the run from both gangsters and police, framed for crime the did not commit, Max Payne will uncover the truth about the death of his family, navigate numerous plot twists, and become face to face with those who have destroyed his life.
