Project IGI (also known in some markets as “Project I.G.I.: I'm Going In”) is a tactical first-person shooter released by the Innerloop Studios and Eidos Interactive in late 2000. By the time of its release, this detailed and ambitious first-person shooter received praises for the technical solutions that have brought large open-world environments into the FPS genre, high-quality sound design, and detailed graphics.

The driving force that fueled these technical innovations came from the use of the proprietary game engine that developers at Innerloop created for the use in their 1997’s combat flight simulator game Joint Strike Fighter. Even though it innovated in many fields, the game was also criticized for the outright lack of multiplayer, weak enemy AI, and the number of technical issues that affected the stability of the game.

Immediately after the release, the game received favorable reviews from the worldwide media, and although it failed to become a million-seller, it did manage to become one of the few games from the early 2000s that has achieved cult status for its technical solutions and the impact in had in game development over the next several years.

Project IGI is a first-person shooter game that stands out from its contemporaries due to its unique gameplay. Unlike team-based MMO games such as Call of Duty, players must complete stealth missions on a solo campaign. This means players must be cautious about being seen and employ strategic tactics, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the game.

In a similar vein to classic console games such as Medal of Honor, Project IGI 1 for Windows 11/10 emphasizes reconnaissance, stealth, and tactics for solo play. Players take on the role of Special Air Service soldier David Llewelyn Jones, who must locate a stolen nuclear bomb to prevent a catastrophic act of terrorism. With 14 challenging missions to complete, players must employ their skills to achieve their goal.

Today, Project IGI is regarded as one of the early FPS shooters that tried to establish the gameplay set in the open world, much before the arrival of more celebrated releases such as Far Cry in 2004.

Plot

Project I.G.I is centered on the adventures of military officer David Jones who is sent to the former Soviet Union to hunt for Russian arms dealer Jach Priboi, who is suspected in the theft of missing nuclear warhead. Through the 12 large missions of the singleplayer campaign, David Jones will locate Jach, find the true masterminds of the warhead theft, and engage in combat against highly-trained Russian special forces crew led by the homicidal Ekk.

After his exploits in this game, the protagonist David Jones was featured once again in 2003. sequel I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike.

Gameplay

Project IGI is a single-player game consisting of 14 complex and challenging missions, each divided into smaller objectives. However, it does not allow saving the game in the middle of a mission, which can be frustrating. Even on the lowest difficulty level, some missions are still tough to complete, and starting from scratch after dying adds to the game's complexity.

The absence of an automatic save feature is particularly inconvenient since the game's main objective is to infiltrate military bases and encounter hordes of security guards, some of whom are equipped with sniper rifles. Unfortunately, the game's AI mechanism is still spotty and needs improvement, as enemies may not react when their comrades are killed, and guards can appear out of nowhere and kill the player without fair play.
