Review

Sons of the Forest, the sequel to the first-person survival game The Forest, delivers a truly haunting experience that elevates the inherent horror of its setting. Developer Endnight Games has created an island filled with strange sightings, creatures with spine-chilling gutturals, and even a woman with multiple limbs. The game’s new creatures and options to defend yourself from its inhabitants reinforce the game's inherent horror.

The premise of Sons of the Forest is to rescue a billionaire and his family, but the game slowly reveals far more pressing matters to worry about. The transportation helicopter you're in crashes, and you're immediately greeted by a strange individual who knocks you unconscious. Later, you find one of your teammates hanging from a rope, and another is buried underground.

As you explore the island, you can encounter these mysteries at your own pace, following as much or as little of the main story as you trek along. The game features a handy GPS device that has the map of the island available from the get-go. The game's new dynamic seasonal system will affect the environment, potentially making it harder to keep your hunger and thirst levels up during winter.

The Forest game provides you with multiple tools to defend yourself against the island's inhabitants, including axes, spears, bows, and armor made out of leaves. Enemies can put up a fight, gaining elevation by hopping on rocks and jumping at you or trying to circle around you for a backstab.

While combat could benefit from some tweaks to deliver a more tangible impact upon hit, the game's new mechanics double down on your reactiveness toward the island's hostility. You can chop enemies' heads off, hold them in your hand, and show them to others to scare them away, or place them on spikes for similar effects. Enemies will often crawl back in fear upon being injured, asking you for mercy using hand signals.

Sons of the Forest for PC is less of a puzzle box and more of a pit that players fall into, but they will likely continue playing to learn more about the world, even if it means losing a piece of their own humanity each time they abide by its rules. It is too early to say whether Sons of the Forest's new flavors will be enough for the experience to stand out from its predecessor in the long run.

With a new cast of characters, dynamic seasonal system, and a host of new creatures and tools to encounter and utilize, it offers an eerie and immersive experience that will keep players on edge as they explore the game's mysterious island.

While the combat mechanics could benefit from some refinement, the game's emphasis on reactiveness and strategy adds a new layer of tension to the survival gameplay. Overall, Sons of the Forest is a worthy successor to The Forest and a must-play for fans of the survival horror genre.
